Milbank(e) of Croft, Yorkshire
« on: Friday 13 October 23 00:12 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor Ann who married Francis Linskill in 1711 at Middleton Tyas. Her residence at the time of marriage was Croft.
Ann's surname has been transcribed as Nelbank from the marriage image online but after searching hundreds of records online I cannot find any other mention of that surname.
The closest I can find is Milbank(e). Ann & Francis had children Jane, Francis & Mark (in that order).
There are several Mark Milbanks recorded in Croft & I presume Ann & Francis' son Mark is named after her father.

There is an extensive pedigree for the Milbanke family online but Ann cannot be found on it.
I cannot find a baptism record for Ann who may have been born c.1690.

Can anyone suggest as to what I should do next?
Many thanks.

At first glance it does look like Nelbank in the image of the register, but a comparison with other entries on the page suggests it's actually Welbank. There's a baptism with the surname Walker about 6 entries higher up the page, and the first letter is the same. Upper case 'N' (see Nupt: at the start of the line, also November etc) starts in the same way, but it doesn't have the curl/hook on the bottom of the right hand upright.

Also important to note is that Ann was described as a widow, so this probably won't be her birth surname.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Many thanks for your reply. I think you may be right. At least I'm not at a dead end. I'm off to explore some more records. Thank you again

The index for Probate records has a few for the name WELBANK at the appropriate time.
These look like they could be worth investigating:
Christopher WELBANK Jan 1724/25 North Cowton YKS 78/61
and maybe
Wm WELBANK April 1747 Kirby Knowle vol 90

Copies can be purchased from The Borthwick Institute.
