Commonwealth War Graves Commission are appealing for blood relatives of Pvt Gordon Leonard Stapley - Royal Berkshire Regiment - Service No :- 41492 - died 31/10/1917 - buried Reading Cemetery.
Currently remembered on a special memorial but the grave now identified.  CWGC are in the process of producing a headstone to mark his grave.

41492 Pte.Gordon Leonard Stapley, 6th.Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment, Died of Pneumonia while recovering from Wounds received in action, at the 1st.Western General Hospital, Fazakerley, Liverpool on the 31st.October 1917.

This entry gave the following details :- In the 1901 Census, Gordon, aged 9, was residing at 3 & 5 Market Place, Reading with his father William, aged 46 who worked as a Director/Manager Employer at a Drapers shop, his mother Helena (44) and his sister Maud, aged 20.
Also living at this address were 10 boaderers and 4 servants.

When the 1911 Census was taken in 1911, Gordon (19) and working as a 'Sculptor/Undertaker' was residing at 4 Queen Victoria St, Reading with his father William (55), now a widower who also worked as a self-employed 'Sculptor/Undertaker' at their home address.
Alice Hopkins (25) was at this address employed as a 'Housekeeper'.
Gordon's mother, Helena had died in the 2nd.Qtr.of 1907.
