Illegitimate birth, trying to find a father - Parker/Mcenteer?
« on: Sunday 15 October 23 02:28 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to find information on one of my ancestors, Patrick Mcenteer (possibly something else I will attach his name here). With Sarah Parker (3 Oct 1841 - ?) he had Agnes Parker (6 Feb 1860 - 1896). They were not married and I am having difficulty figuring out how I will find out more on Patrick. I have information on Sarah which I will put below in chronological order, but does anyone have any suggestions or is able to find anything on Patrick?

Agnes appears in the 1861 census with her maternal family. She is listed as the daughter of her grandmother, Susanna (1816 - 1865) in Toxteth Park. She appears with her "siblings":
Thomas (1837 - ?)
Sarah (1841 - ?)
Edward (1847 - ?)
Jane (1849 - ?)

In later life, Sarah married William Mark in 1872 and John Brown in 1878. She had another daughter, Sarah Jane with William in 1874.

I've attached Agnes' baptism record below which shows her parents.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sorry, the baptism was at St Patrick's in Liverpool. Sarah and her siblings were also born in Liverpool but their mother Susanna was born in Ireland.

Have you looked at the Patrick McEntee (a tailor, born 1838 Ireland) who is in Liverpool in the 1861 census – “married” to Ellen with 7 month old child.

He is also Joseph Patrick McEntee in other records (including a trial for murder of his wife in 1881)

With such an unusual surname, it is hard to imagine that there would be more than one Patrick McEntee in the Liverpool area at the right time.

That Patrick McEntee is working as a tailor in 1851
Aged 19 and visitor (and employee) for James Fox – Irish master tailor in Liverpool St George.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGPP-FN4   (McEntee transcribed incorrectly)

His year of birth is a bit changeable.
Patrick 1851 census – born 1832 Ireland
Patrick 1861 census – born 1838 Ireland
Joseph Patrick 1871 census – born 1840 County Meath
Joseph Patrick 1881 census – 1839 Ireland
Milligan - Jardine – Glencross – Dinwoodie - Brown: (Dumfriesshire & Kirkcudbrightshire)

I expect newspaper reports will give you more detail.

The maiden name of his wife was Ellen CANNON.

The only marriage I can find for her is 5 Oct 1856 Liverpool to Patrick MOOR
Patrick Moor from Mayo - son of John Moor and Mary Malley
Is Moor an alias for McEntee? Or is he a different husband?

Looking at births in GRO, I’m inclined to think that that marriage is for an entirely different Ellen. (You would need to look at the civil marriage record to see what the groom's occupation is, to be more certain.)

So I am now thinking that Joseph / Patrick McEntee and Ellen Cannon were NOT married.
They have a son named Joseph Thomas McEntee in 1859 who died at 6 months. His RC baptism in St Joseph Liverpool has the surname spelled as McIntyre.

The daughter Mary Alice McEntee born 1860 died in 1862. Her RC baptism is at St Joseph Liverpool with the surname spelled McEntee.

Thank you for all your research!

I've had a look at the 1861 census in the Liverpool area and think that there are four other possible options which I'll put below:

#1
Patrick Mcentire born 1832 Ireland, boarder

#2
Patrick Macintyre b. 1813 Ireland m. Catharine b 1824 Ireland
-   Patrick b 1843 Liverpool
-   Elizabeth b 1859 Liverpool
#3
Patrick Mcintyre b. 1829 Lowsh, Ireland m. Mary b. 1827 Armargh

#4
Patrick Macintire b. 1833 Dublin, Ireland m. Mary b. 1832 Dublin
-   Sarah b. 1855 Liverpool

I've also had a look at my DNA matches and have found five matches that are connected to the Parker family and all have a Mcintyre family from Co. Down who moved to the Liverpool area around 1880 in their trees. I believe that there must be a connection between my Patrick Mcenteer/Mcentee and that family so I'll have to research around them.
