1851 Census
« on: Monday 16 October 23 22:19 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone, I have been looking for some family members, Owen Thomas, born in Manchester in 1826, & wife Margaret, born in Manchester in 1830.

I cannot find them on the 1851 census but I know that on 25th October 1851 they were living at 17 Thompson Street in Manchester when their son, Thomas Thomas, was born.

I cannot seem to be able to search by address - there is one possible I have found for Owen but not with Margaret:

1851 Census
Address: 90 Broughton Road, St Simon’s, Salford, Manchester
Name:   William Fill      Age: 28   Relation: Head   Born: Milthorpe
Occupation: Common Brewer
Name:   Harriet Fill      Age: 35   Relation: Wife    Born: Manchester
Occupation: House Keeper
Name:   Ralph Walworth   Age: 31   Relation: Lodger    Born: Clifton
Occupation: Common Brewer
Name:   Owen Thomas      Age: 25   Relation: Lodger    Born: Pendleton
Occupation: House Porter
Name: Thomas Nixon   Age: 22   Relation: Lodger   Born: New Castle
Occupation: Brass Founder

Can anyone help?

Thanks, Luke

A large part of the Manchester 1851 was water damaged.  Margaret could have been living in one of those areas

I do not see Martha on 1861 census, or a death record, so not sure if she is their daughter?

That Owen Thomas you have shows as unmarried.

This looks like your family in the unfilmed records.

Thank you all.

I've never heard of the unfilmed records - is this the full information they hold?

Thanks, Luke

You can read about it here.

The sample image shows how difficult it was to extract the details that they do have.

The link I gave was to the unfilmed record and Dundee has provided the fuller information.
If I recall, the subscription sites now have access but initially it was the local history society who did the work.
It is still useful for looking up streets and names but there is no further information.
