I cannot find any of these places in Sussex, the latter Chatham is in Kent.

There is an article in the Reading Mercury dated 10 April 1797 under the heading

Berkshire Supplementary Militia

Robert Searle of Easthampstead labourer substitute for John Harris of Winkfield, cordwainer.

Was the Militia activated, could he have met Lydia somewhere other than Berkshire?

Lizzie's find and thoughts

FindMyPast has transcript for baptism of Elizabeth SALE d/o Robert and Lydia on 29 Nov 1818 at Easthampstead with a note : Privately Baptised at Clapham in Oct 1815

In 1871 Lydia is with son James in Easthampstead and says she was born in Clotham Sussex - could this be the "Clapham" mentioned earlier and is "Bure", the small village of Bury Sussex?

As a relative newbie to researching I am finding this all confusing. I saw the newspaper article but not sure what it is saying. What does it mean when someone has a private baptism, is this significant?
