Colton (Lancashire north of the sands)
« on: Tuesday 17 October 23 21:41 BST (UK) »
I'm following up on a family who lived in the Colton area in the first half of the 19th century.

Richard Crewdson, born at Ridding Side, south of Colton, married Isabella Nelson at Colton in 1809.

They have 12 children, 11 baptised at Colton. The first 5 are born at Green Head, close to the church.

The next 5 are born 1817 to 1827 at Snaith House, and it is this place I'm trying to locate.

The last child, Joshua, is born 1833 a mile to the east at New Hall, Bouth, and that is where the family were in 1841. In 1851 they are at Cringle Mire, adjacent to New Hall.

Does anyone know where Snaith House is/was? I can't locate it on the 1840s OS map, so suspect it may be one of the buildings in the village near the church.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

I've already paged through the 1841 & 1851 censuses for Colton, because many properties are named.

No luck so far!

The Crewdsons seem to have taken over Snaith House from Edward Birkett, farmer, whose will was proved in 1816.

Have you accessed any of the documents from CASCAT relating to Richard Crewdson,
Richard Crewdson of Cragg near Bouth Coulton,Lancaster Malster and his wife Agnes ,two separate documents mentioning land and rentals , might be worth ordering them or checking to see if there are any land plans , the year 1786,  and another document relating to Richard Crewdson deceased in 1872 relating to Riddingside,  also Serawith House briefly mentioned in another document 7th June 1825,
