Tasmania-Marriage Lookup- TOHARA
« on: Friday 20 October 23 05:35 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if there would be much information on the Tasmania bdm cd about a marriage or is it just an index?

I have never ordered a certificate from Tasmania before so I’m not sure of the process!

Many thanks

Marriages
Prior to 1896

Names of the people being married
Date and place of marriage
Age at marriage (sometimes only whether “under” or “over” age, i.e. 21)
Occupation and status (e.g. bachelor and spinster)
Names of witnesses to the marriage

1896 – names of parents, and places of birth added
https://libraries.tas.gov.au/family-history/births-deaths-and-marriages/?print

[Of course the above information would depend on just how thoroughly they filled out the form]

The registers were pre-printed and this is what they look like after 1896.

The CD is just an index as far as I know.

Hi Belindy, If you put in a copy request through Libraries Tasmania (Archives) you should be able to acquire a copy of the marriage certificate you quoted - https://sltas.altarama.com/reft100.aspx?pmi=308159673053216444 Tas Archives have the church registers for St Martins Anglican, Queenstown. Their church register reference for the time period the marriage took place (1912) is Marriage registers 14 Sep 1908 - 6 Mar 1943 NS1475/1/17-27 Z889 (This is a microfilm) Quote the names of the marriage couple and the date plus the marriage register references and they should be able to send you a digital copy. I'm not sure of cost but it is far cheaper than applying for a certificate through BDMs.

The marriage certificate books after I think 1896 were created with triplicate forms. One for the married couple, one for the church and one to be sent to the central BDM registrar. The Tas Archives now has custody of many, many of the church registers.

I've attached a blank copy of the certificate that was used in that time period. Much more comprehensive than earlier versions and as the details were coming from individuals themselves more comprehensive.
