(Sir) Robert Rynd & family
« on: Friday 20 October 23 08:13 BST (UK) »
I am looking for additional information on the family of (Sir) Robert Rynd who had been a Catholic priest but left the priesthood, became a protestant and married (Helen Gairns) - had a large family. I know of 2 children (Agnes married William Colt in 1563) and William Rynd died 1628. I think the family resided in the Perth area - the dates are early but wonder if they were of sufficient means to leave wills, property etc

I am not sure if he was officially a Sir or if this was a nickname - the surname is now quite rare - variants are Rhind, Rhynd, Rind etc.

Some of this information came from a history of the Colt family.

Clergymen were sometimes referred to as 'Sir' so perhaps Robert Rynd was not a knight.

Also Dominie is not a personal name in Scotland. It means 'headmaster' - we sometimes used to refer to our headmaster as 'The Dominie'.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks Forfarian :D

Not heard of "Dominie" before - had assumed it was a variation of Dominic!

A reasonable assumption :)

This prompted me to look 'dominie' up in the online OED. It says, '1.a. A schoolmaster, pedagogue. (Now chiefly Scottish)' and the earliest reference cited is, believe it or not, as follows: "But will the dainty Domine, the Schoolemaster keep touch", by W Shakespeare and J Fletcher, Two Noble Kinsmen (1634) i. iii. 41.
