I have a photo captioned as one of my father's great grandmothers - who lived 1815-1892, 1838-1921, 1848-1917, and 1844-1917. I have another in which what looks like the same woman is on the far left. I don't recognize any of the other people in the group photo, and I'm not sure where or when it took place (1910??), or what it suggests about the participants. Suggestions welcome.

Hi,

It certainly looks like the same lady!

Any idea what the lady in the centre is wearing? Could it be a nurse's uniform?

I have no idea about dating these photos, but maybe giving this thread a bump will bring some more suggestions.  :)

Yes, it does look like a uniform. I wonder if she is the nanny of the little girl she is grasping, rather than her mother.

The more I look at the top picture, the more I wonder if it was correctly captioned (probably by my mother consulting my father). I have an 1890 picture of my father's grandmother Margaret Hughes, who was born in Flintshire in 1870, and the top picture looks rather like an older version of her. But the leftmost woman in the lower photo looks over 50, so could the lower photo perhaps be as late as the 1920s?

You can rule out the first 2 on your list as the 1st. pic. was taken late 1890's so
1898-1900.
The 2nd. is post war probably 1918-21ish.
Agree the lady at left back is the lady in pic. 1.
Don't agree the other lady is in uniform this was just the style at the time.

Just noticed something.
The stylish lady at the front appears to be holding someone's hand but who's?
The hand itself looks very odd & possibly for some reason has been superimposed
from another photo.
A question, was either husband of the last 2 on you list still alive post war.

Jim..I think the small girl above has her legs over the gent at front left arm. This would possibly indicate a close relationship..father maybe? Possibly her parents are at front holding hands.

The nose seems similar on the adult females.

Yes, the couple at the front are holding hands. The man’s left arm is hidden by the little girl’s legs. The woman seems to be wearing a glove which makes her hand look a bit odd.

Thanks - that's very interesting.

Both later husbands predeceased their wives by a decade or more. They were:
William Swann (1844 Preston - 1890 Barrow-in-Furness), butcher
... married to Eliza Wade (1848 Kendal - 1917 Liscard), 7 children

Robert Harding (1837 Somerset - 1905 Liscard), gamekeeper turned tobacconist
... married to Henrietta Rose Peacock (1844 Bath - 1917 Liscard), 6 children

The husband of the grandmother I mentioned was:
Robert Hughes (1846 Hawarden - 1922 Seacombe), sharebroker
... married to Margaret Hughes (1870 Flintshire - 1951 Wrexham), 5 children
