Burial Place of James Knowles (1855 - 1868)
« on: Saturday 21 October 23 20:49 BST (UK) »
James was killed at Oxton in late June 1868 when he was thrown from a horse and broke his neck.

There is a very brief report of his death in the Cheshire Observer on 4 July 1868 saying the horse was startled by a dog and threw him.

I have everything else for him (baptism @ Christ Church, Claughton and 1861 census @ Oxton) except where he is buried and I'd be grateful if anyone can find him.

Thank you :)

Not sure if this is your James... but there is a burial for his brother Alfred 1865 age 6 that fits with census & birth GRO details on the Cheshire database. I don't find it very user friendly.

The burial for James is in the correct area for census 1861, Woodchurch/Oxton. No other James Knowles death around the timeframe or correct reg district, so may well be him along with Alfred. Additional info given for James is buried by coroners order.

In the database look under burials WOODCHURCH Holy Cross, 1571 - 1871

Ahh...I see the date now, written backwards. Thanks for clarification it is him.

So brother Alfred was buried 29.12.1865....got it, must admit not the best user friendly database imo

Once you discover how to work out the date it's quite a good site, albeit a bit limited as there are lots of parishes not covered.

Thank you both

Yes that's definitely him.  You are right, its not the most user friendly! but I've just had a brief look at all the Knowles' buried there and found a number of his cousins, uncles, grandma and great grandma - pretty much all the Claughton Knowles' family on there is mine  ;D

Thanks again  :)

Basically, because it was a sudden death there would have been an Inquest after which the Coroner gives permission (issues an Order) for the body to be buried or cremated.
