London: William Andrew Dodd and Hester Aaron
« on: Sunday 22 October 23 01:27 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information about William Andrew Dodd and his wife Hester / Esther Aaron, who reportedly lived in London from about 1800-1835 or later.  I do not know if they came to the city from elsewhere.  They supposedly had 4 boys who migrated to Chicago after their father's death.  Joseph Francis Dodd was likely the eldest and came to Chicago (1860s) via Ontario (1840s).  His brother Louis joined him there in his men's tailoring business after 1870.

Holden's 1811 directory has an entry for William Dodd, tailor, 35 St. James's Street.

Welcome to RootsChat.

There is this DODD family in the 1841 census at Waterloo Rd, Lambeth:

Eliza  DODD    30  (milliner)
Morrice              9
John                  7
Joseph              3
Lewis                9m
HO107/1060/2 pg14 &15

Just a possibility, as there is a Joseph and a Lewis and 4 boys together.

I see on Joseph Francis DODD entry on findagrave, his birth date is 4 Feb 1835.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/245825902/joseph-francis-dodd

That age fits with his marriage in 1865 in Ontario to Caroline HURSELL (which says aged 28, born England, parents Andrew and Hester AARON).

So the above 1841 census is probably not right.  :-\

Hello
There is a William Andrew Dodd in Stepney about the right date

William Andrew Dodd bapt St Mary Whitechapel ,Stepney 25 April 1790 s of William and Mary Dodd. new Castle Street
Mary Ann 28th August .1791 new Castle St.
Margaret 3 Aug 1794 Castle St
Thomas 14 Feb 1796 Castle st

I'm guesssing a marriage at Whitechapel William Dodd and Mary Poole 6.7.1789

But that's  not shouting out as the right one and I can see no children baptised but if they are Jewish they wouldn't be.

1870 Census Chicago
Francis Dodd 36?/38? England
Bodecia? 22
Caroline 2 moths
Esther L Dodd 74  England

If that is her she would be born 1795/6 which sort of fits with William Andrew's baptism

synagogue scribes is another good website for finding Jewish records
https://synagoguescribes.com

However, I couldn't see anything for DODD or similar. There are a few Esther AARONs, but not apparently the one who married William Andrew DODD.

Thank you all.

Yes, I have checked JewishGen, I can't isolate Esther's family.  Louis married a Jewish lady (they were married by a rabbi in the 1870s, so I think these is a very good chance that he had a Jewish mother as I don't think a rabbi would have married them at that time, otherwise).  Francis Joseph married a non-Jewish lady.

Thank you for the suggestion of the tailor.  Both sons Francis Joseph and Louis were tailors.  Supposedly there were other sons, but I have not been able to identify them.

I haven't found any children's baptisms, but it is possible that there might be synagogue records.  Thank you for the hint.

The 1841 census is interesting, because of the names and location.  Eliza doesn't fit, but it could be an error and being a milliner wouldn't be a stretch in a family of tailors.

Louis / Lewis (my 3g grandfather) has different dates of birth in every record (as do all of the other members of this family), but it appears that he was about 7 years younger than Francis Joseph, so this records doesn't look likely.

My grandma had a handwritten tree, which contains many errors, but perhaps there is a kernel of truth in it.  Grandma's handwritten tree / notes say that in 1842 the family settled in New York and in 1847 in Canada.  After his death Grandpa Dodd settled in Chicago.  Had four brothers.   If William died prior to 1841 the family could have been just mom and the 4 boys and this census record might be correct.  I wish I could find a relevant death record for William.
