Hello, I am trying to find out when my Great Grandfather James Browne was born if possible?  He was baptised on 16 June 1855.
Parish Variants   Cannavee, Kibonane, Kilbonane, Kilmurry, Moviddy, Kilbonane and Cannavee, Moviddy
Diocese   Cork and Ross

His parents were James Browne and Ellen Swiney.  My GG is given as being illegitimate on his Baptism record.

PLEASE NOTE THAT HIS SURNAME COULD BE SPELT EITHER WITH THE E ON THE END OR WITHOUT.

I do have other records for him but am desperately trying to find out when he was born.   It would have been under a Roman Catholic Birth.

His Death is under this film number if that is any help as I'm not to sure if the death certificate would give his exact birth date.
FHL Film Number   101739

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

Kathryn

Civil birth registration started in 1864
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/civil-records/help/what-years-are-covered-by-the-historic-records-of-births-marriages-and-deaths

do you have his  marriage certificate? that should give a father's name if it is known

Pre 1864, the Baptism record is the substitute birth record.

What other records do you hold for him? Do they give an 1855 birth record?
Do you know who raised him and where?

I am not sure I have managed that search - is this his death?

It gives some context.

Apologies for my reply in italics - I can’t change it. ::)

Irish baptisms tend to be within a few days of birth, I think you are as close as you are going to get to an exact date. I doubt an illegitimate birth would be announced in the newspaper, which is an alternative source.

Death certs do not give birth dates, only an age which is supplied by the informant, there was no checking on accuracy.

Did his parents go on to marry?

Hello.  Yes that is Jame's death.  Died 1934.  I can't find a marriage for James Snr and Ellen although it is stated in his Will that he left his daughters Maria and Kate Browne his personal possessions/wealth.  Really bizarre as I wasn't aware of these two ladies and nothing left to James Jnr.

This is all you’ll find by a search on that film number

Is that the same James Browne snr - when did he die?
