Thanks both, finding those census entries is great, and certainly looks like him, though he wasn't born in Bristol (lived there from about age 9), and i'm pretty sure his wife is the same Eliza who married as a widow, and was still alive in 1901 (not found her later yet, but not a prime concern). Her age and place of birth match in later censuses, family members match, and her father George was a cordwainer and shoemaker on her marriages. Why Robert was in Lambeth seems a bit strange though if he was trying to sort out his mother's disinheritance (in Bristol).

I don't suppose you can find him in 1851 can you, newly married with a young son.

Just found the images of both Robert's marriage to Eliza Tarring on 5 Nov 1848 in St John's, Bedminster, and that of his son Thomas when he married Caroline Bedell on 5 Dec 1872 at the same church (giving the incorrect name and occupation for his father). I've just spotted that both parties on both marriages were living in Brown's Row at the time. Not found on any maps but there is a topic on Brown's Row on here, suggesting it was a small part of Whitehouse Street

Have found a possible 1851 for Eliza, transcribed as Eliza Sarrine (but could be Tarring), unmarried, born Bristol, lodger, weaver, at 2 Court in Bradford Street, Ancoats, Manchester. Only 3 years after her marriage, son Thomas not with her, but in the same area of Manchester where she gives birth to her daughter Elizabeth.

Ah! Been in work all day but have just found what appears to be Thomas (as Guilvier) in Bedminster in 1871, lodging with his soon-to-be wife Caroline Bedell, her widowed mother and siblings. Fireman in flour mill, born Manchester .

Looked for a Manchester birth but as Gilvear and variations, but that one looks promising, thanks opsrey. What a weird set up. Maybe Robert and Eliza split up if he was too interested in trying to establish his mother's right to her father's estate, but no apparent connection to Manchester for her, or to Lambeth for Robert.
