Charles Atkins, Oxford c1760
« on: Tuesday 24 October 23 18:37 BST (UK) »

I have the marriage by licence of Charles Atkins, widower of St Michaels, Oxford to Charlotte Leech of St Mary Magdalene, Oxford taking place at St Mary's on 20 October 1763.  Charles is a mystery - I can't find any information about him before or after that marriage.  I believe Charlotte remarried in London in 1773 but can't be sure without more information. Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

There is a marriage for a Charles Atkins in Oxford in 1746 to Deborah Calcott found on F M P and  from https://whipple.one-name.net/oxford/marriagebonds.html

There is also a possible burial, but in 1774.  Have you contacted Oxfordshire Family History Society?

That’s interesting, thank you.  I know he was a widower but have no info regarding his first wife.  This might help

No, haven’t tried OFHS - I’m not a member so hadn’t considered it.

He was also a widower when he married Deborah Colcot 13 October 1746 by license at St Michael.
Note named spelled Adkins

Just the marriage in the register no witness named.

Image on ancestry.

Witness at the third marriage was Sarah Lipscomb, the other was George Whitton- he signs several other entries so possibly the parish clerk.

Ooh, a serial widower! That’s a first for me, I have a couple of unlucky wives but not husbands.

What I’m trying to do is confirm he was the husband of Charlotte who married George Davison in London in 1773 and if so, what happened to the couple between their marriage in Oxford and her later marriage in London. There are so few ‘proofs’ in the records at that time, but every little bit helps.

Thank you 😊

Thank you so much for all this information - it is appreciated.

A problem is the timing of this Charles' death - 8th June 1773 when my Charlotte married George Davison on 22nd April 1773.  Either she isn't the same Charlotte who married Charles or she married when he was still alive.  I guess it would be useful to know if Mrs Charlotte Adkins/Atkins was in or around Oxford in 1773.  If she is there post-June then she isn't my Charlotte.  If she isn't, is she already dead?

Thank you all, again, your help is brilliant!
