Rachel Jones
« on: Tuesday 24 October 23 21:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all, One of my great aunts Rachel Jones was born in Christchurch, Newport in 1879. I think it’s her as a cleaner aged only 12 in Upper Raglan st in 1891. My heritage and freebmd is all I have and can’t positively find her after 91. Her brother Henry born 1881 is almost impossible to find after 91. Can anyone shed light on either please, Phil.

No details given of Henry’s birthyear/birthplace or where he was in 1881.

Who were their parents?

In 1891 Rachel is a boarder - not a servant

Marriages can be searched for free here.  www.freebmd.org.uk

She was living in the Newport RD in 1891 & there are 6 Rachel Jones marriages in that RD between 1896-1901.  Have you checked them out?

She may have married Harold Frederick Barry sept qtr 1899

1901 census
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9TY-5NR

1939 register shows Rachel Barry (son Victor H is in same household) with dob 29/10/1878 which ties in with birth reg and she was the only Rachel Jones registered that quarter at Newport.

Thank you all and sorry about the lack of information from me in the first place. Osprey I think you could be right with Rachel’s marriage and 1839 connection. I see on free BMD that Victor married a Sheila Owens in1925 but not sure if they had any children. Henry who was at St Julians works off Caerleon rd aged 10 in 1891 must have died as I can’t see him anywhere after. Going back to John Jones marriage to Rachel Arnold, it states that Johns father was William (deceased). A few years ago I contacted Pontypool reg office about Johns birth certificate 1849 Llangibby but they didn’t have him there. I now think he might have been registered in Newport for Caerleon. Would it be possible for anyone to shed any light on this possibility, Phil

Certainly no obvious births registered to the couple and none on the 1939 register or lines blacked out. Victor Harold died in 1979 and he made a will. I think Sheila died in Torbay in 1983, dob given as 30 July 1901. Also an administration for her in 1987 noting 'last known to be alive 12 Feb 1983'

There is a baptism of a John, son of James & Ann Jones in Llangibby but not until 5 June 1853 and your John is older and father incorrect. If he was born in Llangibby, he would have been registered at Pontypool if his birth was registered.

Thank you once again Osprey. Johns father was definitely William as on John and Rachel’s marriage certificate. Are you able to check Newport for him please?

there's a baptism in Llanllowell, a neighbouring parish of Llangibby, 21 April 1848 John son of William, labourer, & Elizabeth Jones. Other baptisms to the same parents in the same parish - Mary 1 Nov 1840 & Ann 13 Feb 1844 leading to this census entry in 1851

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGT2-KG6
and 1841

Without knowing his mother's maiden name, it's guesswork trying to find his birth. Which is why I'm trying to work back and find his family. It's also possible that his birth wasn't registered.
