Does anyone have access to records of German or Italian Newspapers
« on: Thursday 26 October 23 17:25 BST (UK) »
I’m hoping to find someone who is able to search the 1920s and 1930s German and / or Italian newspapers.  I’m researching an English magician (escapologist) who was on his way to becoming the next Harry Houdini. He was very prominent during 1927 and 1928 but had to retire from escapology in the late 1929 because of an accident. However, he returned to performing again between 1934 -1939.  He went under the name of INO the Wizard of Escapology and Magic, also, The Great INO. His fame was escaping from a strait-jacket whilst hanging upside down with his feet tied by a rope which was suspended from the roof of the theatre. He also escaped from handcuffs, ropes and chains.

I have a photo of INOs autograph book which has been signed by Adolf Hitler at a theatre called ???? Gardens, Berlin. I think that a report of his act was in the Exberliner.  Unfortunately, the autograph is undated but must have been during the years stated above.

Similarly, there is an undated autograph of Benito Mussolini who saw INOs act at the Romano Theatre, Rome.

If anyone can search the German and / or Italian newspapers, say 1926-1929 and 1934-1939 for an advert / notification about a forthcoming performance or a review of his act, it would be greatly appreciated.

Paul, with thanks.

Possibly the Wintergarten varieté, Goebbels reportedly went there in 1936 and was unimpressed by Wilson & Keppel (no word on his opinion of Betty).

Albert Speer mentions Hitler attending the Wintergarten:

Have been searching with added keywords:
Zauberer for German papers (no joy yet for Ino, but lots for Merlino!); and
Mago for Italian papers.

Wondered if Thomas Middleton might turn up in the Ancestors Onboard database in FindMyPast, can't recall if it would include cross channel trips or not.

Hitler definitely present at the Wintergarten in 1936

and in 1939 to see another noted escapologist

Hi Thanks. Yes I do have this one and about 20 other newspaper clippings off Findmypast but they are all of course, English and Irish.  Incidently, he didn't actually do the Blackpool Tower attempt.

Hi, I've been in touch with a couple of his descendants on Ancestry, one of who copied that autograph to me but with no additional info.  The 1939 escapologist was 'Murray' who states, in his book, that he was there and the event is acknowledged on WiKi.  Hence, I'm trying to prove that INO was there first.

Hi, yes the keywords are the key. On 'findmypast, you have only two choices and it often reads INO as 'ing'
