Susan Sadler nee Candler: late C18, early C19, Somerton
« on: Monday 30 October 23 02:05 GMT (UK) »
The will of Samuel Candler (1754-1826) of Hartest refers to "my niece Susan Sadler", to whom two cottages in Somerton, occupied by William and Samuel Sadler, were bequeathed. I can find a 8 August 1803 baptism record for Elizabeth Sadler, who was born on !8 March 1803. This records says she was baptised in Somerton and her parents were William Sadler and his spouse, Susan Candler. The 1841 Census for Somerton lists both William and Samuel Sadler, but no Susan Sadler.  I can find no other record of Susan Candler.  I would most grateful for any information or any advice of how to find information on this woman.

Thanks, Kay
Susan Sadler baptised 12Dec1795 I don't think can be related to Samuel Candler or be the Susan Candler/Sadler who gave birth to Elizabeth Sadler in 1803 unless she was baptised very late.
I have pursued Susan Butcher thinking she might be a widowed Susan Candler, but I can find no evidence of a prior marriage.

"The will of Samuel Candler (1754-1826) of Hartest refers to "my niece Susan Sadler",

When was the Will written?...when does Samuel CHANDLER identify a niece Susan CHANDLER?

The will was written in 1823. I have a copy of the will held by the Suffolk Records Office. The testator is clearly CANDLER, not CHANDLER.  He was a brother of my 4th great grandfather.

The source I have for Elizabeth Sadler's birth and baptism (England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 on Ancestry.com) gives the birth and christening in 1803 and does not mention All Saints.  Do you have an alternate source, please?

The baptism for Elizabeth in 1802 that Emeltom found is transcribed on FindMyPast

Kay

It is from the Suffolk Baptism Index 1538-1911

Interesting - the index has 7 children bapt to William and Susan at Somerton between 1793 and 1808.  Children born 1802 onwards had mother's maiden name as Candler and pre 1802 her maiden name is listed as Butcher

Thanks, Kay
I have now got bogged down in trying to identify Susan's parents and how they might be related to Samuel.  Any suggestions/
Regards
Brian
