I have Elizabeth J . Bevil ( ch . St . Martin in the Fields , London , Middlesex 12 Jun 1796 ) at this almshouse ( shown as Clifton ) on the 1871 and 1881 censuses but can't seem to find anything about it . Other online almshouse info . ( and books ) of the area ( Haberfield , Colston etc...) , show background details when searching , but not Hills Almshouse . I know there are records in the Bristol Archives to visit at some stage , but wondered if there is anything out there that any of you have any info . and knowledge base of .
Stoneleigh House is the name of the building now and know that it continues to support the community with assisted living to use a modern term of its usage .
Does anyone know of the criteria to have been taken in ( even nominated to be taken in ) ?
Elizabeth seems to have been of some monetary independence having been a governess / school mistress / teacher throughout her life and it is known there were other family members living in the near area . Self financing would seem a strange idea to obtain entry but could it be a possibility ? Possibly she was unable to fend for herself through poor mental health ? but it seems she lived to be 108 years of age at death at the St . Josephs for the Little Sisters of the Poor home at Cotham Hill , Bristol - March 1/4 1895 .
Of note , the 1861 census has her at no . 1 Eldon Place ( basically next door to the almshouse with an Louisa Pavey - a dressmaker of no known association ) and I wondered what , if any did living nearby have in her admittance to Hills Almshouse . Be interested in any knowledge or thoughts on this point ?
Also for info . she is in Cheltenham on the 1841 census as a governess ( Sandford Lodge ) and employed by a farming family on the 1851 census at nearby Withington ( Bennett family ) again as a governess .
I've looked to give as much detail as known and would be interested in any views , thoughts or source of further info .
