How do I find an exact burial location at Glasgow Cardonald cemetery?
« on: Tuesday 31 October 23 16:20 GMT (UK) »
I've used FamilySearch.com to identify the internment number and lair numbers of my ancestors in Cardonald cemetery in Glasgow, however the cemetery records only state which section the lair is located but does not say the exact position of the grave.  I've not been able to find a detailed map.
Without knowing the precise location it would potentially involve searching hundred of grave stones on foot.

Does anyone know how to find the exact spot where a grave would be?
Would Glasgow City Council be able to provide the precise spot that the grave is situated?

One method that people use to try and find locations of lairs is to look at the Commonwealth
Grave Commission site for that cemetery and check whether any war graves are close to the one your are looking for.

War graves are very distinctive in the cemeteries and can be a good guide to locations within the cemeteries.

See www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/search-results/?CemeteryExact=true&Cemetery=GLASGOW (CARDONALD) CEMETERY

Does this help find at least an area within the cemetery? www.glasgowlife.org.uk/media/hiahln0l/cardonald-cemetery-plan.jpg

Added: However, you need a Section No from the burial registers to help you narrow down the area...

Thanks all, I've got a copy of that map. I also know that it's section K but it seems like the maps aren't precise enough to identify the exact location of the plot. Each section has at least 100 grave stones to search through which could take some time.

A lot of headstones have the lair number marked on the side or rear of headstone

Looking at the lair numbers on the side/rear of gravestones is how we located my Wife's Maternal Grandparents and Uncle grave at Neilston Cemetery, Barrhead.

We have since purchased a Headstone to be put on their grave.
