Synagogue Pontypridd

Hello people,

I am following up on posts I have made regarding family that may have Jewish heratige.

When I was in Pontypridd I didn’t see a synagogue so I was wondering if there is anyone I can possibly contact that may be able to help me.

The family in question is the Gaze family from other posts I have posted

Not sure what period you are interested in but checking Welsh newspapers (1800-1919) might contribute eg.

The synagogue was at Cliff Terrace, Treforest (Wood Road), Pontypridd, CF37.
Founded 1867. Consecrated 1895.

Closed 1978. According to The Jewish Chronicle, 27 January 1978, p.8:
"Pontypridd Hebrew Congregation, founded 1867, has been dissolved and the synagogue premises sold. Torah scrolls have been sent to Birmingham and Israel. The few remaining families have joined the Cardiff community or retired to other areas."

The building is now private apartments.

That’s interesting, Thankyou I wasn’t sure as I never saw one when I was there.

I’ll have to contact Birmingham council or someone for help then, my relative I am looking at is from Pontypridd but died in Birmingham.

I do not have any photographs of him, there hasn’t been anything handed down in the family I’m going off what my grandfather has told me.
