Family member possible Jewish heratige
« on: Tuesday 31 October 23 19:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

I am researching a family member and they moved to Birmingham and died there.

The name is Charles Gaze, born 1869, died 1957.

Buried in Yardley Cemetry, he moved from Pontypridd south wales. I have been told that his family may have Jewish heratige.

If anyone knows anything I would appreciate the help.

I am not from the area and not able to travel so I can’t do it in person.

What is a heratige?  Is it a kind of vestige?  Or prestige, perhaps?
Bagwell of Kilmore & Lisronagh, Co. Tipperary;  Beatty from Enniskillen;  Brown from Preston, Lancs.;  Burke of Ballydugan, Co. Galway;  Casement in the IoM and Co. Antrim;  Davison of Knockboy, Broughshane;  Frobisher;  Guillemard;  Harrison in Co. Antrim and Dublin;  Jones around Burton Pedwardine, Lincs.;  Lindesay of Loughry;  Newcomen of Camlagh, Co. Roscommon;  Shield;  Watson from Kidderminster;  Wilkinson from Leeds

Family background the , I couldn’t think of the correct term. Heritage would be used as well but it may not be the correct word

As a starting point:

The Birmingham Post & Gazette
Fri., May 17, 1957

“GAZE. – Charles, passed away peacefully on May 16 at the residence of his daughter, [redacted in case she is still living] Mrs. W. G. Coventry, in his 89th year. Funeral private.”

If correct, this means he was born circa 1868.

[Edited to add daughter's name, since she was born in 1900.]
England: Barnett; Beaumont; Christy; George; Holland; Parker; Pope; Salisbury
Scotland: Currie; Curror; Dobson; Muir; Oliver; Pryde; Turnbull; Wilson
Ireland: Carson; Colbert; Coy; Craig; McGlinchey; Riley; Rooney; Trotter; Waters/Watters

That would be correct, from the census that I have looked at, the date of birth has been around 1869 and I only found his date of death by accident.

I am only looking for his family history, there was a possibility of Jewish DNA in the family.

His daughter would probably most likely be dead now as she was born in the year 1900.

His burial record can be downloaded from here for £10 but it doesn't look like it would answer your question:

He wasn't buried in a Jewish cemetery, so I'm guessing the possible Jewish heritage is farther back in time?

Can you post the info from the census records to make it easier for people to try to think of other possible resources that might answer your question?

Yeah thats what I was thinking, my grandfather has always said that their surname is a Jewish surname as there were Jewish relatives. He used this man as an example when he mentioned the Jewish DNA/heritage.
