Thank you so much for your reply. The Mary Goodman buried in 1850, I think was born in 1793, while Elizabeth's relative was born in 1823.

She was unmarried at the time of James's birth. I don't know why I hadn't considered her marrying later though - I'll get looking through the records!

Something must have happened to her if her sister brought up her child  :-\

I wonder if she went abroad and started a new life.  There are women of the right name and age going to the US before 1851 but quite a common name and little information to go on.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

In April 1845 Grounds Goodman was charged with using threatening language to Mary Goodman  ::)

There was also a baptism in March, Cambridgeshire on 18 Oct 1847 of a William Goodman - mother Mary.  Was this another son of 'your' Mary

Yes, I read about her father and wondered if they might have been arguing about the baby. It was very soon after that her son appears to have been taken in by her married sister. It was that story that got me so invested!

I hadn't seen William's baptism - I'll check that now. Thank you so much.

he's not easy to find after that

There's a William Goodman b March on later censuses. His dob varies from 1842-45, but he looks like the son of William and Mary A in March in 1851. Father a farmer of 30 acres

Oh yes, I just found the record. I'm not sure it could be her as Goodman was her maiden name rather than her married name. Milliepede, I'm sorry I missed your message earlier. I'm wondering if she might have left England too. I hope she had a better life wherever she went to. The parts I know sound so sad!
