Tovey middle name
« on: Tuesday 31 October 23 22:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Just a quick question: do people if Tovey was ever used as a common middle name in its own right? It appears in two generations of my family in Glamorganshire between 1840-1870. I know it as a Welsh surname and was wondering if this means it points to the surname of an ancestor I have not found or if it could just be used standalone.

Best wishes
Sam

Hiya Sam. If you Google Tovey Jones, Tovey does appear in it's own right as a christian name. There are many hyphenated versions as well. Others don't indicate if they are two surnames.

In other parts in the UK it is quite common to give as a middle name the grandmothers surname or other prominent family names from the past.
I just entered the Tovey name into family search and the were large numbers of children with Tovey as a middle name in Wales only a few as a first name
England had large numbers as a middle name but only 22 as a first name.
There were very few in Scotland where the name was used.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Thank you both.

Yes it does feel like it should be a surname to me and given as a middle name in honour of that ancestor, but I can't find any Toveys in my ancestry. Hmm ...

Needn't be related i.e. Midwife, Nurse, loved friends, admired hero(ine)s
But if you've got it in two generations, hmmm.

Yes indeed. With more than one individual too.

If you/anyone else is interested. The first person to appear with the name in my tree is Charles Tovey Edwards (Swansea, 1840). Born to John Isaac Edwards and Charlotte Rees. To be fair I haven't been able to find Charlotte's parents so there could be a link there, but I couldn't find any Tovey/Rees marriages
