William Cartwright in Ireland 1851
« on: Saturday 10 September 05 09:07 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the date and place of birth for William Cartwright, who was a musician in the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards.  I know he married Sarah Green in Birmingham in 1847, and then moved to Ireland, where the first two children Isabella Maria and Thomas were born.  By 1855 he had moved to Leicestershire, and by 1859 the family was in Glasgow.  However, although I can find the family members on the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 censuses, William does not feature on any of them!  The Irish link is therefore my last hope!

Carwood:
You might want to post on "Armed Forces". You may have more luck there than in searching Ireland. I did a quick look at http://www.regiments.org/deploy/uk/reg-cav/dg1.htm and noticed that 1st The Kings Dragoons were deployed overseas much of that time period which would explain his not showing up on census.

Pat,
Many thanks for this - it is really interesting to see where the regiment was based - I have moved the enquiry to the armed forces section as suggested. Thanks again,
Carol
