Guildable in Portsmouth
« on: Thursday 02 November 23 16:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking at the 18th Century Rate Books for the poor rate in Portsmouth. Although there are headings for areas like Buckland & Kingston which I recognise from when I lived near Portsmouth, there is one heading called 'Guildable' which I do not know.

Was this a geographical area of Portsmouth in the 1700s ??

many thanks
John

The definition of “Guildable” seems to be it was taxable, so there must be some historic context to do with taxes??

Hi,

Here's a rough map from 1815,

There are some records about it at Hampshire Record Office. You could give them a ring, I've always found them to be helpful,
