Jean Horn birth details
« on: Friday 03 November 23 07:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me with this please. The first part is easy:

"March 2nd James Horn on Keithfield had a daughter baptized named Jean,"

But then I'm stumped about the rest. It looks something like:

"Also Howard and William somename something"

Are these the names of godparents, or witnesses or something?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for those quick responses. I think you're right thanks. It was "witnesses" that troubled me the most.

It is interesting then that the mother's name isn't mentioned, but the winesses are. I wonder whether one of them is from the mother's family? ( I am trying to find the mother's name.)

This is the Parish of Tarves in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1802.

Looking at the ScotlandsPeople index for Tarves, a James Horn has the following children baptised:

William 24-5-1795
George 22-7-1797
Elizabeth 1-12-1799
Jean 2-3-1802
Christian 20-1-1804

As often, only the father's name is recorded. There doesn't seem to be a surviving marriage record for James Horn and his wife.

Assuming that this is the same family (you'd have to check them to see), it looks as if the son William might well be the crofter at Upper or Over Woodhill in these censuses:

William in 1841:

William in 1851:

William in 1861:

William in 1871:

https://www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59026d70e9379091b1e5d05f/william-horn-1871-aberdeenshire-tarves-1796-?locale=en

William died in Tarves in 1878 (recorded as "Horne"), and his mother's maiden name is given in the index as Tough (pronounced "Tooch"). It is quite likely that the Ann Horn, aged 79, staying with William in 1841 is his widowed mother. In that case his mother is Ann Tough.

If you look at the original of William's 1878 death certificate and it gives his father's name as James Horn and his mother as Ann Tough, it will tie things together and suggest that your Jean's mother is Ann Tough.

Thanks GR2, that's great work! Thanks so much.

I too hadn't had much success in finding James Horn's marriage, or Jean's mother's name on her birth or marriage documentation. I hadn't given up yet, but following William through was a good thought.

I got a copy of Williams death documentation as you suggested, and it did indeed show that Ann Tough was his mother. But it names his father as "George Horne Crofter (deceased)".

I've done a quick search and haven't so have been able to find a plausible George married to Ann and father to Jean or William. So is this another couple or could they simply have recorded the wrong name? (Perhaps his second name was George, or he was known as George for some reason? Or he died young and William never knew him so didn't know his name??)

I don't have enough experience to judge that. What do you think?
