Advice regarding 2 websites with indexes from NRS
« on: Saturday 04 November 23 19:11 GMT (UK) »
There are 2 websites which have some indexes from National Records of Scotland.

https://www.oldscottish.com/

and

http://www.scottishindexes.com/

Both have a record from the Crown Council Procedure Books NRS Series AD9 which mentions my ancestor in 1833 - for fraud.
Both require you to send off £3 to get the full entry, as these are just indexes on the sites.

Has anybody  had any dealings with either of these companies?
I presume they have the same record. Would one of them be any better than the other?

£3 is certainly much cheaper than hiring a researcher at NRS I would think.

Thanks for any input.

For what it's worth I believe it's two different companies offering a very similar service. I don't think I would be able to say that one is better than the other. In fact if they are doing their job correctly both should have the same information.

Well worth £3, or even £6, IMHO.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Goldie

I ordered a full entry from Scottish Indexes and had a rapid and completely satisfactory reply but, that said, I know nothing about the other site, so cannot compare.

Thanks Forfarian and jayaygee.

That's very helpful about Scottish Indexes. Good to know it all worked out well.

Scottish Indexes is run by husband and wife genealogists Graham and Emma Maxwell, who are based in central Scotland. I've not used their paid-for services, but they've been running a regular series of free online genealogy conferences since the first Covid lock-down - the next one is on 25 November. Very helpful and informative.

Does the £3 only pay for a transcription? Have you checked with the original holder of the record for the cost of copies of the actual document(s)?

I went with Scottish Indexes - thanks jayaygee and ruthhelen for your input.
A very prompt and efficient service - ordered one day here on the other side of the world, and received the reply by the time I got up the next day. Quite impressive.

They sent the actual image of the page from the Court register - so the real thing, not a transcription.
In my case, not a lot of information about my ancestor as he was acquited of what he had been charged with, but interesting to see anyway.
3 pounds well spent.
