Search in Southwark area for John and Charlotte Whiten pre 1800
« on: Sunday 05 November 23 09:50 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to further research into the Whiten family. I believe in the 1780-1800 period they lived on Beech Street nr the Barbican. They were dissenters and I believe were buried in Bunhill Fields. I have most of their  records, but not a confirmed address, or births for John, or Charlotte Purveur as she would have been.I believe John was born abt 1751 and Charlotte abt 1759.

In later generations the family were involved in bookbinding and stationery, however I don’t have any evidence that John and Charlotte were. I am intrigued by Charlottes surname of Purveur, but have failed to find any records at all for any Purveur’s. Were they French Huguenot refugees?

I would be most grateful if someone could help find any further information

John and Charlotte were married in, and were from, the parish of St George, Hanover Square.
Both signed their names. Have you followed up on the witnesses to the marriage?

There is a Thomas Purver , bricklayer, in St George, Hanover Square (Grosvenor Place) in 1774 poll books.
he also appears in records in 1784.

Good Morning
I looked at other Purveurs marrying in the parish of St George Hanover at the same sort of time  and we have
John 11.10.1784 Mary Grover
Their daughter Christian born 1788 who married William Baker 1811
Thomas 1772 Lydia Falkner the bricklayer mentioned earlier Will 1800 Deptford.
Avis Heritage 1789 to Thomas Pitt who died at Milton nxt Gravesend 27.4.1827 .Will at Kent Archives(not seen it ) Born 1757
And Charlotte.

Given the small number and the fact that Thomas and John seem to be brothers I'd guess Avis and Charlotte are sisters.

Thomas' PCC Will 1800 gives us his wife Lydia. brother James of East Clandon ? Surrey ,John Ethidingfield? Surrey (really faint ink sorry) sister in law Rebecca Darnie? and mother Jane.

This leads to his father's Will John West Horsely husbandman 17.1.1775 under London Wills.Wife and 3 sons.

James Will 1800 East Clandon husbandman just mentions wife Rachel.
The baptisms for West Horsley for the right dates are awful ,they are falling apart and seem to have some gaps.
There is Robert 1739 and Thomas 1741 ,the actual dates are unreadable for me.
I think the family would be well worth a look for Charlotte but I can't see an actual baptism

Witnesses to the marriage were
Caleb Greville (probably church cleric as he appears regularly on the register)
And Jos Hayes

The 1802 and 1805 directories were viewed on Ancestry.
