Newspaper Look Up
« on: Monday 06 November 23 23:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Can anyone who has access to the Canadian Newspapers look up a Marriage for Alexander Cook and Barbara Robb approximately 1915???
They were both born in Aberdeenshire.
On 1916 Census Alexander and Barbara and Elizabeth Jean Cook are living in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan
The 1921 Census for Rhynie, Aberdeenshire show Elizabeth Jean Cook (my Aunt) born circa 1916 / Elspet Cook born circa 1918 (both born in Saskatchewan and also Dorothy Cook born circa 1920 in Colorado, USA.
Alexander was born in 1889 in Rhynie and he was recorded on the 1901 census in Rhynie.  I haven't found him on 1911 Census so I think he must have sailed about 1907 & 1916
I'm unable to find either of them on a passenger list and there's no trace of their Marriage in Scotland.
Thanking in advance for any help

There is an Alex Cook who arrives into Canada aboard the Hesperian out of Glasgow, aged 20, bound for Moose Jaw (Saskatchewan) in June 1909. Matching outbound record shows he is likely travelling with a group all bound for Moose Jaw: Eglinton Kirkland, Bella Cameron, Alex Forsyth, and George Young.

In the 1920 US Census, they are in Bent County, Colorado with the two older girls; ie Dorothy has not yet been born. This census was taken in April/May so she was born after that time.

Unfortunately, Saskatchewan has not put their historical marriages online.

The family are all noted returning to Scotland aboard the Saturnia out of Montreal on 26 July 1920. Dorothy is noted as one month old.

There is a Barbara Jane Robb, aged 25, who arrives from Glasgow into Halifax aboard the Numidian in March 1910, bound for her sister, in Elva, Manitoba.

In the 1911 Census, she is noted as Barbara J. Rob, a domestic, born June 1882, in the home of Charles & Isabell Roblin in Souris, Manitoba.

Manitoba does have their marriages online, and I'm not seeing a marriage there.

In that same 1911 Census in Souris district, Manitoba (which encompasses the village of Elva where Barbara was  headed), there is a Margaret A. Rob, aged 20, born January 1891, Scotland, arrived in Canada in 1910, a servant in the home of Alfred Fulton.

Maggie A. Robb, aged 19, arrived aboard the Southwark out of Glasgow into Quebec in June 1910, bound for Elva, Manitoba. Looks like she was also going to a sister.

I've found a marriage for a Margaret Ann Robb to a Charles McHarg in the municipality of Arthur, Manitoba on November 22, 1911.   He is also nearby in the 1911 Census, aged 24, born in Quebec.  In the 1921 Census, Charles & Margaret are in Ontario near Thunder Bay (then known as Fort William), with children named Elsie and Ruth, born in Manitoba and Alberta, and one month old Gordon, born Ontario.

There's another child to Charles & Margaret named Charles Victor, born February 14, 1914 in Elva, Manitoba, who dies in Rainy River, Ontario on June 8, 1915. Parents are Charles McHarg, born Maple Hill, Quebec, and Margaret Ann Robb, born New Dew, Scotland.

Another child, Glen Keith James born and died in 1926 in Stratton, Rainy River District. Both boys are buried in the Stratton cemetery (available on Find-a-Grave).

(Margaret) Ruth & Gordon's obits can be found online... Here is a site with detail on her husband's life. Margaret had a brother in Mb. as well!!!
Also the mention of Harvesters flocking to the grain-growing Provinces is likely Alexander Cook's story as well. He & his fellow passengers had probably either read the call for farm help needed in Canada at harvest time or the free land grants available here! (Unfortunately, the sad part of the story is that it had all been taken away from the aboriginal & metis population)

Nice find!  I think her brother is George Robb who is noted in Souris district, aged 38, in the 1911 Census, born Scotland:

If that is he, then click on the "link" in above census result as he's with a James Robb (half-brother?) in 1906 Melita (who is called a servant ) He says he immigrated 1889 & the lad the year the census was taken?

The patent he signed in 1901 was not the section of land he was farming in 1911
