John Henry Morgan of Bolton (1897 - ??)
« on: Tuesday 07 November 23 18:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm researching John Henry Morgan of Bolton. He was born in 1897, which is the year of birth given by the 1901 Census. John was possibly a trader in used / second-hand clothes in the 1960s and may have lived on St George's Road in Bolton. I am interested in any children or living relatives he may have, and also about his roots in Wales. All information greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat.

Do you have his parents from the 1901 census. I don’t see one born 1897.

https://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/birthsearch.php has a John H Morgan b 1897 with mother’s name, Morgan.

1901 3618 /155/18
Has a John H Morgan, 3 yrs - grandson.
Is that the one you mean?

You may have seen 1911 where he is shown as born 1897 in the indexes.
Was his mother Margaret Morgan who married Captain Burton in 1902 at Bolton All Saints?  They were both Hawkers.
Captain Burton died 1909.

Where do you have Welsh ancestry for John Henry?

Thank you for your feedback. Yes, the 1911 census seems to be him - it  matches the John Henry Morgan on https://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/birthsearch.php. In 1911 I assume him to be the son of a predeceased daughter of Kate Dodgin. The other daughter, Margaret Burton (I assume née Dodgin, not Morgan) lives in the same house. Kate Dodgin therefore had at least two daughters, one of whom married a Morgan and the other a Burton. Nice catch on the Captain Burton marriage!

1939 Register: I found two John Morgans, but with different birth dates and w/o the name "Henry". FreeBMD gives death entries for a John H Morgan in 1968 and 1969 in Manchester and Bucklow, and one later in 1979 in Liverpool. JHM was still alive in Bolton in the 1960s, when he was a second-hand trader (aka "hawker"), so I would expect the death to be registered in Bolton.

The Welsh ancestry bit is family hearsay, but I want to pursue that. Hence, JHM's father/mother would be interesting. I'll order JHM's birth certificate and see if I can follow it back from there.

Captain Burton married Margaret Morgan - her father Harry Morgan deceased.
Her address is the same as 1901 census.

No, I don't know if JHM married. He had at least two illegitimate children, for one of whom he was issued with a bastardy order in 1922, but he never married that woman.

It looks as though he was the illegitimate son of Margaret Morgan although I can’t see Margaret in a census until 1901 and can’t see her mother in 1891.
Have you found John in 1921?
