James Earl circa 1860s Ohio
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 08:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone

I'm trying to trace James Earl (born 1816 Elm, Cambridgeshire, England) and his wife Mary Ann, nee Marwick (born 1823 Elm, Cambridgeshire, England).  They migrated to the US and I can track them to Oxford Township, Erie County, Ohio in 1860.  It is believed James Earl died in the 1860s as his widow Mary Ann married again as a widow to William Barnes, before migrating to Australia.  James & Mary Ann Earl had one known child, Sarah Elizabeth (born 1852 Emneth, Cambridgeshire, England) but is likely to have died as a child as she is not recorded on the 1860 Census Return.

Can anyone assist with possible leads?
Than you for reading my post.

Regards
Stuart McDonald, Western Australia.

Have you got James & Mary Ann on the 1851 census - when did they marry?

Thank you all for your responses, I have James & Mary Ann Earl still in Cambridgeshire, England in 1851 as per the Census with no children.  I have their marriage in 1845 and the birth of their daughter Sarah in 1852, so migration must have been after that date and before the 1856 application for naturalisation.  Presumably their daughter died before the 1860 US census but I can find no record either in the UK or US.  Mary Ann died in 1898 in Australia, her death certificate suggests she had one deceased child.  After 1860 I cannot locate James' death or Mary Ann's remmariage, he death certificate suggests it was in the US in the 1860s.
I appreciate all your time for looking for me.
Regards
Stuart

Did Mary Ann go to Australia by way of California?  Should we be looking there for records of James's death and Mary Ann's second marriage?

The man who declared his intention to become a citizen in 1856 said on the document that he arrived in May 1849.

edit: I should have quoted reply #4 to make it clear what/who I was responding to.

Did Mary Ann go to Australia by way of California?
I am not even sure of an approximate departure date.  I suppose she had to travel to a port to  catch a ship but it is likely her first husband died in Ohio (my supposition).  Mary migrated to Australia to join her brother William Marwick, but also leaving her other brother John Robinson Marwick who lived and died at Bowling Green, Ohio after migrating from Cambridgeshire before Mary Ann did.
But thank you for your insights.

Thank you for that, discounts him being "the" James Earl.
