What is known about William Barnes?  When and where was he born?
In short.....not a lot.  This is the some total, gleaned from his death certificate.  He died 28 February 1909 at York, Western Australia.  As he had no children the detail on the death certificate is scant.  He was aged 80 at death (if accurate, born circa 1829).  Retired farmer.  Married in "America", no other detail and resident in Australia for 40 years (if accurate, arrived 1869).  And that's it!

"Rock Island County Clerk Karen Kinney wants to help residents trace their family trees  ...  We are committed to providing easier access to genealogy information and encourage you to email any comments or suggestions. Please email the County Clerk."

You could inquire whether there is any hope of additional details on that marriage.

This might be him, staying in Huron County, Ohio

? Thomas Earl, naturalization, Huron County, because of being a Civil War veteran

This is the county's index of marriage records:
Index to Marriage Register, Male, 1835 - 1896 Rock Island County
indexed under 1867
Barnes, William, to Mary A Errill, Book C, page 84
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q288-4R1T

and this is the register itself:

page 84
Marriage Register, Rock Island County
January 24, 1867, License #5255

I wonder if James Earl could have died in the Civil War.  I had discarded that possibility on the grounds that he was over the age to be drafted, but he could have volunteered anyway.

I'm trying to figure out how Mary Ann ended up in Rock Island, IL. One brother was in Australia, another in Bowling Green, OH. It would be unlikely for her to move west on her own if James Earl died in Ohio, so I'm thinking he went west between 1860 and 1867, and died in or near Rock Island.
I haven't found him or William Barnes in the area.

edit: I think we have the right people, just trying to account for her locations.

How ever they came to be in Rock Island, I wonder if they went down river to New Orleans and shipped out to Panama and then from Panama to Australia.
