;D
No....it is possibly "stretched" guess.  The ages/birthplace (England) on the Census match (sort of).  There is a Tom Earl at the same address and James had a brother Thomas.  I'm sort of grasping at straws I know!

I just dragged Mary Ann Barnes, formerly Earl, nee Marwick's death certificate out of a box in my garage.  It doesn't list her first marriage (the information was supplied by her husband William Barnes).  All the age, parental data matches.  In the marriage field it lists William Barnes with 2nd husband in brackets, it lists the marriage as occurring at Rough Island, Iowa when Mary Ann was 38, indicating circa 1861 as a date......however I can't even locate a "Rough Island" using Google.

If the couple in Erie County are the right ones, that naturalization in Huron County is very tempting. Huron County is just south of Erie County. It's less than ten miles from Oxford Twsp. to Norwalk, the county seat of Huron.  It's possible that James first went to Ohio in 1849 then returned to get his wife and so was registered in England in 1851.

Do you know what became of the brother Tom?

I've never tried to trace Tom as Mary Ann is my line, but the possibility of trips to and from the UK to the US at that period aren't totally out of the question.

I wonder if it could be Rock Island, an island in the Mississippi between Illinois and Iowa (and actually belonging to Illinois).

Well......I had found a marriage for William Barnes and Mary Errill at Rock Island, Illinois 24 January 1867.  Maybe, huh?  Which possibly pushes James Earl's death between 1860 (Census) and 1867 (Errill marriage).
