Nimmo/ Evans
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 20:53 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find my wife’s 3 x great grandmother Jane Evans nee  Nimmo born Paisley, Renfrewshire c. 1819 (cannot find birth record)
She married Archibald Evans 24th September 1842, Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire
1851 census finds them living at Main Street, Duntocher, Old Kilpatrick with their family William 7, Janet 4 and Grace 8 months.
I cannot find them on the 1861 census
1871 census finds them at 29 King Street, Port Glasgow with children, Jane 19, Archibald 16, John 10, Anne 7 and Mary 5
The 1881 census has Archibald Evans living with his daughter, Janet’s family at Victoria Street, Paisley but no sign of his wife Jane?
I cannot find a death record for Jane Evans either, I have however found criminal records for a Jane Nimmo or Evans in 1881, 1882 and 1889?
Any help would be gratefully appreciated

That Donald family have links to Paisley and Greenock, so I wonder how Jane might be tied up with them? It might be worthwhile trying to find a link.

This is the same Donald family in 1851.

Hopefully, you can get at least a father’s name from the certificate.

The prison records look to belong to your Jane Nimmo / Evans.
Looking at dates, she may have died in prison? ?

I would suggest searching newspapers to see if there is a mention of her crimes.

Greenock Telegraph 11-1-1889:

AN OLD WOMAN SENT TO PRISON
              FOR THEFT.

named Jane Nimmo or Evans was sentenced to
eight days' imprisonment for the theft of a
woollen shawl from the door of a shop in
Princes Street occupied by Robert James,

times previously convicted.

I'm sure you will have great fun telling your wife this  ;D

This might be a possibility:

Greenock Telegraph 1-3-1889 (under "Port Glasgow"):

THE Funeral of my Husband, Archibald
Evans, takes place To-morrow, at Half-past Three
from the House, 27 Church Street. All Friends and
Acquaintances respectfully invited to attend.
                                                   JANE EVANS.

The valuation rolls for Port Glasgow show an Archibald Evans at Brewery Court, King Street in 1865, 29 King Street in 1873-75 and 1878/7, and at 27 Church Street in 1884/5.

Some notes on a family you may wish to explore further ….. (may or may not be related, but your family have children named John and Ann)

A couple of NIMMO baptisms (John 1803 and Andrew 1805) in Paisley / Abbey to parents John NIMMO and Ann STORY/ STORIE who were married in 1798 in Airdrie.
Their first child Elizabeth born in 1799 New Monkland

Another member of same family
Death for a Violet Nimmo (mother Storie) in 1871 Abbey  - No baptism record for her – must have been born around 1801 in Airdrie. She married David Smith in 1822.
