Ellen Gloyen b.1837 marriage or death Exeter
« on: Wednesday 08 November 23 21:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
I'd like someone to please have a look at Ellen Gloyen, a relative of mine, and see if we can find what happened to her after 1841. Ellen was born to Joseph Gloyen and Mary Scanes in Exeter, and was sister to Mary Jane (1828-1883), Robert (1831-?), Joseph (1833-1885) and Louisa (1840-1913).
She appears in Exeter in '41, but cannot be located subsequently.
Thanks,
Francis G

She married in 1857 to a Jacob TANNER. The marriage certificate shows her father's name to be Joseph ( a painter) and her name was recorded as Helen Frances GLOYEN. Louisa & Joseph GLOYEN were witnesses. Marriage took place at Holy Trinity, Exeter. In 1851, Mary J & Helen GLOYEN are indexed as GLOYER, living with their aunt Rebecca SANDERS.
Helen Frances GLOYEN and sister Louisa weren't baptised until 1851 at St Mary Arches.

Fantastic work  ;D
One thing bugs me though; the 'aunt', Rebecca, is probably Rebecca Scanes, b.1812 in Ide,  near Devon, 10 years before the age listed  ???
I can't find a Scanes-Saunders marriage either

Rebecca Sanders is unmarried in 1851 & aged 30 or possibly 36.  There are several Rebecca Sanders marriages in Devon between 1851-1861 but none in the Exeter RD which is where she was living in 1851

That's really bizarre if she's unmarried. Ellen's mother, Mary, is reliably known to have the maiden name Scanes. There is a Rebecca Scanes d.1852 Exeter which may be her, though the birth date is still a couple of year off even If you read it at 36, but these things happen. My money is on some misunderstanding, perhaps her writing her surname in a shaky hand, that made Scanes turn into Sanders

It is probably wrongly written.
It looks like ‘Sandess’ but transcribed as ‘Sanders’.
‘Gloyen’ looks like ‘Gloyer’.

I should add too that ‘Mary’ is written ‘MaryJ’ but transcribed as “Mary’. The ‘J’ is squashed in.
