Donald born 1681 son of Jon CHISOLME - Inverness
« on: Thursday 09 November 23 11:38 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information about Donald CHISOLME who was baptised 21 Jul 1681 in Inverness, son of Jon CHISOLME, in particular whether he might be (or might not be) the Donald CHISM or CHISHOLM who was in Fordyce, Banffshire, where he married Elspet RICHARDSON on 26 May 1713 and had just two known children in Boyndie parish Banffshire.

Thanks for responding. Having two in 1678 and two in 1680 clearly implies there were two John Chisolms in Inverness at the same time. There is one recorded marriage, namely 27-2-1677 Kilmorack John Chissolm & Anne Fraser and he could be one of them. 1681's Donald could be his but could be the other one's.

I'm hoping that someone has researched these particular Chisholms and has something to say about what happened to them.

ELSPET RICHARDSONE   BORN/BAPTISED   JOHN RICHARDSONE   27/06/1698   CULLEN

If the above is Elspet quite young to be married at the age of 15 or so?

DONALD CHISM   MARRIED   ELSPET RICHARDSON   26/05/1713   BOYNDIE

Children = Boyndie

WILLIAM 21/04/1714, JANET 22/10/1715

I note there is another marriage and based on their only Childs name, I might be worth a look based on Jon’s second daughter was Margaret?

DONALD CHISOLM   MARRIED   MARGARET DEAN   30/03/1716   NAIRN

Child = Nairn

MARGARET 24/07/1716

I do not see any further births for either couple in Scotland but a number of record's only note father. Sadly no death records pre 1855 in both areas.

Sorry to confuse the issue.

Is this the Elspet born about 1713 I wonder?

RICHARDSON   ELSPET   PETER MURRAY   20/11/1726   FORDYCE

It looks like they had 4 children in Fordyce but Elspet is noted as Richie, Ritchy or Ritchie?

Is this the Margaret who married Donald in 1716?

DEAN   MARGARET   ROBERT SMITH   01/07/1718   NAIRN

So did Donald die. Sadly no Kirk Session Records in the period, which may have helped.

Yes, I'd say too young.

Yes, got them. And Donald Chism was a witness on 10/10/1714 in Cairston, Boyndie.

I'd say a distinct possibility.
Possibly Margaret Dean is the one bpt 22/4/1690 Inverness.

I'd say it's more likely that Inverness' Donald Chisolm moved to Nairn than Boyndie's Donald Chism, especially noting there was only 4 months between mother's 1716 marr and her child's birth.

Leaving the Inverness (& Nairn) strand to its own devices,

No, again I'd say too young. But she could be Donald Chism's wife on a second marriage because the Fordyce OPR has: "Peter Murray in Fordyce parish & Elspet Richardson in the parish of Boyndie" which would be compelling were it not that both Donald's children's names were repeated in the Murray/Richardson family, which rather undermines things.

A witness (in 1736) was Wm Richie in Tillenaught, so likely to be the child's uncle. A Robert Richardson/Richie was there in 1730-32, so likely another brother.

This Richardson aspect hasn't thrown up anything (so far?) to progress Boyndie's Donald Chism parentage. But the Nairn aspect is tipping Boyndie's Donald Chism away from him being Inverness's Donald Chisolme. One step forward? Preparing for two steps back!

To reprise, my 6xgtgdmother is Bessie Chissolm with Donald being her brother. Finding Donald's parents seemed easier to achieve than finding Bessie's. So far no luck either way.

Before 1929 the legal age to marry in Scotland was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. The above site, however, makes it clear that this was, in practice, almost unknown.
