I believe that TX stands for 'Time Expired' -- certainly both men were pre-war regulars -- Joseph has a surviving record on Find My Past. He enlisted (in Warrington) on the 19th December 1902. His discharge papers (image courtesy of Find My Past) shows:

The above-named man is discharged in consequence of Termination of his period of Engagement

Can I just ask if it was usual for soldiers on these sort of 12 year terms to be discharged in this way during WW1? I have some rather incomplete records of men who joined up c. 1902. One of them  served 3 years then went onto reserve, before he was recalled in 1914, the other stayed on for his 12 years. Both went on to serve throughout the war.

Prior to 1916 a man was discharged after his 12 year term unless he elected to "take the bounty"
& serve his full 22 years or duration of the war.
When conscription was introduced in Jan. 1916 that changed and a man who would have been
"time served" after this could be kept on for the duration.

Two more Questions regarding Edward Gaskell 8960  are there any Records that he was Wounded?
And why are his British War Medal and Victory Medal under 1st King's and not the Royal Engineers ?
