Avarina Hopkins and Lewis Lewis
« on: Friday 10 November 23 12:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters!

With such common names I am struggling to track down correct information about these, my 3xG grandparents, and would love any tips or advice.

Here's what I know:

Avarina Hopkins b. C1813 Llanfihangel, and Lewis Lewis b. c1811 Llanyshiam married 10 Mar 1843 West London.

They had 4 daughters in London:
Mary Ann 1844 - ?
Avarina 1848 - 1851
Jane 1850 - 1889 (my ancestor)
Margaret 1853 - 1905

Avarina and Lewis's birth years and birth places from census records.
From Avarina & Lewis's marriage record I know both their fathers were called David and both Farmers.

I was given a lot of information about who their families were via email years ago, however none of it was verified or had source material, so I'm trying to do my own research, starting with what I can trace myself.

Where do I even start?

Help appreciated!

I wouldn't call Avarina Hopkins a common name  ;D

She is easily found on the 1841 census with mother & siblings

Thanks Carole,

Sorry, I meant Hopkins and Lewis being common Welsh names, and trying to track down Avarina's and Lewis's families - David Hopkins and Lewis Lewis seem to be pretty common names in Wales! And not knowing for sure their wives names (the mothers of Avarina and Lewis), it's hard to know if the information I'm coming across pertain to the correct Davids...

Where would I see the 1841 census to which you're referring? Where are they living?

Thanks again

All censuses are free to search here.  You mention in your post that you have their birthplaces from census info?

Thank you both.

I've had a look at both those records now, and the baptism record shows Avarina, daughter of David and Ann Hopkins in 1812, and the 1941 Census record shows Avarina with siblings and widowed mother Mary.

How would I know which, if either, are my ancestor?

Yes, from later Census records - 1871 - in London, where Avarina's and Lewis's birth towns are recorded rather than just 'Wales' or 'South Wales' as in previous census records.
