Wedding Cake Church in St . Pauls , Bristol
« on: Friday 10 November 23 14:46 GMT (UK) »
Ann Bevil aged 63 y buried St . Pauls Church , Portland Square , Bristol on 11 June 1852 .

Info . ref . Familysearch shows residence as Portland Sq , Bristol ( although known to have lived with a daughter at Wellington Park Villa , Clifton and died at this place ref . the death certificate I've purchased ) .

Having just returned from this church , there is no graveyard as such with the church repurposed .

The records ( inc . burials ) are available to be researched at Bristol Archives but would like to find out if the churchyard was built upon ( pos . post WW2 ) damage with bodies moved to another site eg . Arnos Vale / Greenbank . The churchyard seemed quite expansive via Bristol Know Your Places maps pre war .
Appreciate any thoughts / info .

But there is a cemetery on the other side of Portland Square, although I am having difficulty in finding out when it was created.

Bristol & Avon FHS has a burial index?
See: https://bafhs.org.uk/resources/local-burial-history/?v=79cba1185463

You could also email the relevant department at Bristol City Council: cems.crems@bristol.gov.uk

Some information on the church here:

https://www.about-bristol.co.uk/chu-15.php

Modern day St Pauls Park was once part of the churchyard.  This map shows the grave yard behind the church.

The size of the modern park seems to correspond to the grave yard shown on the maps.

Hi KGarrad..these indexes would certainly be a possibility but seem out of my date range by only a few years ( unless reinterred ) ?? I was interested in the fact that she was bur . at St . Pauls Church which was in the central area ,  as living in Clifton ( the known area and not just the BMD district / sub district ) , there were local churches closer to her home that were not inc . in the 1848 act .
Wellington Park was away from the inner city central area which inc . the churches mentioned on the site you mentioned .
It seems in my view , any movement of bodies would have been for WW2 damage to the grounds or they were left in situ and built upon / around . Strange there is no info . that I can see baring in mind in real terms its not long ago .

ColC , I checked Wiki first but didn't see anything of use but thankyou for your reply .

Hi Little Nell , I looked through the old maps prior to posting and the park maybe came about from topping off the graves with earth , cement , limestone base and leaving it as such ?? Surely there must have been a review of the graves before that happened but with war damage possibly there wasn't much to record other than the details in the archives . I know other graveyards were made into public parks and walkways throughout the country eg . St . Johns , Bedminster . Central London I've found was a place many graveyards were made into parks through different acts , compulsory purchases etc..

The size of the modern park seems to correspond to the grave yard shown on the maps.
