Could it be that Margaret McCutchon married twice and that John Smith was her second husband? In which case the marriage to him could be under her previously married name.
If she was married twice and the second marriage was in Scotland it should be under both her maiden and her first married surname.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

1901 census:

Elizabeth & mother maybe?

MARSHALL ELIZABETH 1901 - 15   662/2 2/ 7   ARMADALE   WEST LOTHIAN

MARSHALL MARGARET 1901 - 45   662/2 2/ 7   ARMADALE   WEST LOTHIAN

SMITH WILLIAM   1901   - 20   662/2 3/A 14   ARMADALE   WEST LOTHIAN

This could be William but he is with a Daniel 45 & Emalina 41 Smith & several other children, related maybe?

You would need to see original census returns to be sure.

Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

I'm wondering if the marriage & birth of William took place in Ireland, it might be worth a look at the free site below. Sadly it has been offline all day so I have not been able to check.

Lookas if William Smith and Elizabeth Marshall may have had two children

James, born 1907, Armadale
Margaret Grieve, born Uphall, 1908, died 1990 in Uphall

This should make it easier to find them in the 1911 census.
