James Birkett 1769-?
« on: Monday 13 November 23 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Help needed. I am having problems finding the death/burial record for a James Birkett, born in Troutbeck 1769. He married Ann Coward of Skelwith Bridge around 1793, this information comes from the will of John Coward, Ann's Father. On his Daughter Hannah's marriage record, 1847, it states his occupation as a Tanner. On his Wife Ann's death certificate 1854 it states that he is deceased. Also, on the 1851 Census, Ann is at Skelwith Bridge, visiting her daughter and a widow so, James was deceased prior to 1851. Ann is found at Clappersgate on the 1841 Census but, no James! I have searched the usual sources, Ancestry, Family search, GRO etc with no results. The GRO death search picked up a few James Birkett's who were registered in the Ulverston Union, Hawkshead but non were of the correct age or occupation. Does anyone know where James would likely have been buried? He's not at Hawkshead, I have checked that. Thanks.

If he died before 1.7.1837 there will be no GRO entry

Thanks for the reply Kay but no, not him. I found two from 1839, one was in the workhouse at Milnthorpe, the other a black smith! The search continues!

The fact he is not shown as deceased on Hannah's marriage cert doesn't mean he wasn't.  The fact he isn't on the 1841 is more indicative that he died before 1841

Ok. On his Daughters marriage record in 1847, it says he's a Tanner. It doesn't say deceased?

I notice that Ann Birkett is a servant in 1841 - indicative of being a widow

That's useful info, thanks. Any idea where the residents of Skelwith would be buried?
