just realised Birthdate 1st Feb 1879 and baptism 24th Aug, so it is posssible that Ann is his mum and she sadly did die after his birth.

Looking that way  :-\  and she was only 25.

There is a birth registration - June quarter 1879 - John Edmonds - mmn = Done - Congleton RD.  That nearly ties in with the 24 August 1879 baptism in Widnes, although the birth date given there is 1 February 1879 - parents =  William (Shoemaker) and Ann Edmunds of Sandbach

Think her age may be a little exaggerated?

So...by the 1881 census, Ann Edmonds (was Done) has died and her son John Edward Edmonds is living with his  maternal grandmother Elizabeth and her new husband (following the death of both their spouses) James Rathbone?

You are all amazing and have unlocked a whole new set of doorways to discover / get confused by.
Thanks so much

From that 1869 marriage -

2 October 1853 - Middlewich

William Done - 21, bachelor, Butcher.  Father - John, Butcher
Elizabeth Leech - 17 - spinster.  Father - John, Nailmaker

Both were from Middlewich, and both signed the register.

Her birth reg - Ann Done dec qtr 1853 Northwich vol 8a pg 218 mmn Leech

baptism 9 Dec 1853 Northwich Anne daughter of William, butcher, and Elizabeth Done
