Marriage and birth records in Virginia
« on: Tuesday 14 November 23 01:16 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone tell me where to find marriage and birth certificates in Virginia between 1924 and 1933. Family search does not appear to have them. Thanks so much. Nikkei

"Virginia birth and death records from 1912 to the present, divorce records since 1918 and marriage records since 1936 are now available in an index form. Click here to access indexed information on open records.  In Virginia, death, marriage and divorce data become “public” information 25 years after the event; birth data are “public” after 100 years."

Thank you for this information. I followed the link and used their form online for a birth but the response led me to Ancestry and one needs a subscription to access.

There are some marriage records here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/3477666

And here - https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1708698

Fairfax Co., Virginia has an index for marriage licenses for that era, if that happens to be where you're looking - https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/circuit/historic-records-center/marriages

Also links for Orange Co. & Surry Co. here - https://www.cyndislist.com/us/vital/va/

Thank you so much for the added information. I accidentally closed this topic as I thought there was nothing else available.

The marriage is between  Gilbert D. Nosworthy and Margaret Teresa Monroe around 1923-1925 in either Virginia or Washington DC. I checked the link you gave me for Fairfax Co. and nothing came up. I could not find any at Family Search a few days ago. I suppose there is a possibility they never married at all in spite of having two children. He just seemed to disappear in their lives.

On the 1930 census, Margaret gives her age at first marriage as 15, so maybe they had to run off somewhere so she could get married so young.

My guess is that Gilbert went back to England.  He seems to show up as David Gilbert Nosworthy sometimes.  Looks like he deserted a ship he was working on in 1923 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q294-4XXJ  A 1930 passenger list for Gilbert Nosworthy from England to NY lists him as a hairdresser and says that he made an illegal entry for his previous arrival in 1923.  Gilbert went back to the UK in 1932, but I don't see any return trip to the US after that.  There is a David G. Nosworthy who was a ladies' hairdresser in a 1939 Cornwall, England directory, so maybe him?

David Gilbert Nosworthy of Truro, England put in ad in the paper in 1936 to stop people from slandering him - https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-west-briton/135188049/  That's interesting...

In 1943, there's a D.G. Nosworthy managing a hair salon in Wales and noting American & English experience.  https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-north-wales-weekly-news/135188260/

In 1944, he had a wife & baby in Wales - https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-north-wales-weekly-news/135188340/

He seems to have written a letter about wanting to emigrate to Canada in 1951 - https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-ottawa-citizen/135188408/

Looks like they made it to Canada and he died there in 1973 - https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/143626145/david-g-nosworthy
