MIGGIN(S) from County Meath
« on: Wednesday 15 November 23 03:26 GMT (UK) »
Miggin, Miggins, Muggins, Magin, Muiggin...etc.  :o

Okay...I've tried...but I need help.

I'm looking for the parents of an Owen/Eugene Miggin born in about 1839. His marriage to Catherine Molloy in 1874 says he was age 35. His death certificate in 1888 says he was 50, wife Kate Miggin was present, so that is consistent with the marriage record. Father is listed as James Miggin on the civil marriage. (The name Owen and Eugene are used interchangeably...some of his kids' birth records say Eugene, some say Owen. Marriage and death records are Owen, though.)

Here's where I have a problem...I can't find a birth record for a Eugene or Owen with a father James Miggin born close to that year.

There is a Eugene Miggin with James Miggin and Alice Reynolds as parents, but born in 1833.
There's a Eugene born in 1837...but parents are Thomas Miggin and Anne Smyth.
There are other possibilities that aren't really likely.

The marriage has two witnesses, Anne Kennedy and Thomas Reynolds. Her mother is Anne Kennedy. So it would make sense that his mother is a Reynolds...but could his birth year really be 1833 and therefore be totally wrong on his marriage and death certificates? I would think the age would be off before I would think his father's name was wrong on the marriage record.

I have a really hard time figuring out all the Miggins in Co. Meath.

The priest is Chas ie Charles Reynolds.

Here is a marriage for Thomas Miggin with father James (deceased) . His residence is the same townland and a witness is John Miggin.

On his marriage, as you say, he states 35 yrs. He may have wanted to appear a bit younger but he may not have known his age. It wouldn’t have been that important.
Is there a residence in the baptism record you have found?

Death of Alice Miggin, Corbalis, the informant, Owen, her son.

I see that Owen and Catherine were living in Corbalis on the birth of their son, James.

Well, the Miggins are tricky. They pretty much all come from Kildalkey, Trim, Ballivor…and they generally all name their kids the same names. Haha.

Interesting about the Thomas with deceased father James… So maybe that Thomas and Owen/Eugene are brothers… But I don’t see a Thomas with James and Alice Reynolds as parents.

The Alice in that death record might be Alice Walsh, who married a Thomas Miggin — older than the Alice Reynolds who married James Miggin.

It’s all so confusing.

If yours aren’t from Corballis townland, then maybe that death isn’t the right Alice.
