Townland in Ahoghill
« on: Thursday 16 November 23 00:47 GMT (UK) »
Can someone decipher the name of the townland in Ahoghill for the birth of Rosetta Moore? See attached or at:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1878/02980/2091672.pdf

Also, what is written in the margin to the left of the birth entry for Rosetta Moore?

Possibly........

Ballymontenagh which might sound similar  to the Ballymontna/ena that is on the certificate.

This is a good resource
https://www.townlands.ie
and I am sure that KG  :) will be along soon to put up a reference to an equally good one....

Actually here is the ref from Openstreet. The ref to it is at the bottom of the townlands page
https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/4138161

I suspect that what is written beside the entry are the initials of whoever made the amendment on the entry changing the month from February back to January.  When we chnaged registers we had to initial and date the changes and sometimes, depending on the register, this was initialled and dated by a witness ie another person in the office.  .

...and here is it contracted to show the townland as south of Ahoghill village, and SW of Ballymena.

This is maybe a curved ball, but it just looks like Ballymontra to me and I'm wondering could it be a local version or corruption of Ballyminstra?  The 'PlacenamesNI' website shows historical versions of this townland with 'mon' instead of 'min', albeit that Ballymontra isn't listed.

https://www.townlands.ie/antrim/toome-upper/ahoghill/cloghogue/ballyminstra/

I also wondered if the following 1869 marriage for a William John Moore is relevant, the bride Margaret Jane's address was Ballymontra, however her MS was given as Maxwell, not McCann.  The groom was living in Gloonan, which borders Ballyminstra.

I'm leaning back to Ballymontenagh again...

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Clohogue/Ballymontenagh/924830/

Daughter Sarah b. 1886:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1886/02584/1954933.pdf (just looks like Ballymontra to me)

Son Samuel b. 1888:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1888/02508/1929795.pdf (this time, clearly Ballymontenagh)

Added: I still can't find a Moore-McCann marriage

I think Sarah’s birthplace looks like ‘Ballymontna’ which sounds very similar, I would think.
