Adam Hay and Isobel Newton
« on: Friday 17 November 23 14:05 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone can help me in regards to finding specific data regarding baptism of  Isobel and Adam’s children
A contact recently asked me if I knew whether it was true that Adam Hay was Head of Thirlstane Castle as mentioned on record for Johanna Hay
Never heard this before however it is shown clearly in record of Johanna Birth which I have attached supplied by my contact
Have extensive data for Hay family and several branches including some that settled in Chester Illinois , as this is my direct lineage via Mary Hay another child of Adam and Isobel
Any help at all would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Edith A

Can you provide some details of a timescale?  There is an Adam Hay / Isobel Newtown (not Newton) marriage in 1767

Have you looked on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Census Information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

If you select the Old Parish registers there are births listed to this couple between 1771-1787.  Also a possible in 1768 with just fathers name

I think that baptism describes Adam as 'herd' not 'head', and it mentions Thirlestane but not the castle.

A herd was a farm servant who looked after livestock.

They obviously moved around a lot, as the children were baptised in four different parishes: Linton, Hownam, Morebattle and Yetholm. They can't have been long in Thirlestane because Joanna's elder sister Mary was baptised in 1785 in Morebattle.

Thirlestane Castle was the seat of the Maitlands, Earls of Lauderdale. See
https://thirlestanecastle.co.uk/. It is in the parish of Lauder in Berwickshire.

There is another Thirlestane in the parish of Yetholm, which will be the one where Adam and Isabella lived when Joanna was baptised in that parish. Its listing in www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk says: Thirlestane
Thirlestane/Thirlstane: Authority for spelling The Rev [Reverend] J Baird Minister, Mr Henderson Schoomaster, Stat. acct. [Statistical Account], Dr [Doctor] Turner, Surgeon. A small farm-Steading with dwelling house in pretty good repair, the property of A B Boyd, Esqr of Cherrytrees, the dwelling house is inhabited by two old labouring women. Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi and thanks for that
Knew it was Lauderdale Seat and I had never heard about any connection to Castle during years of research

Was asked by a descendant based in Randolph USA so I will let her know what I have sourced

Many thanks again

Can I ask are you local to the area?

Found some data on Clan Douglas website last night that mentioned John Douglas and his wife Mary Newton/Nuton

I obviously have Newton in tree as Adam was married to Isobel

As some based other side of the border in Northumberland I appreciate your help

Thanks for helping me sort that specific query for my contact

Edith

No. I am in Scotland but not in the Borders, but I knew that Thirlestane Castle is not in the parish of Yetholm.

This map https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.1&lat=55.72069&lon=-2.72318&layers=257&b=1 shows Thirlestane Castle and a farm also called Thirlestane, also, I think, in the parish of Lauder. The farm is here https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/nt5647

There is another in the parish of Ettrick https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.7&lat=55.43679&lon=-3.13057&layers=257&b=1&marker=55.43714,-3.13160 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/nt2816

This is your one in the parish of Yetholm https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=15.0&lat=55.54958&lon=-2.30248&layers=257&b=1&marker=55.43714,-3.13160 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/nt8028

There was another Thirlstane in the parish of Carriden https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16.6&lat=56.01652&lon=-3.60147&layers=257&b=1&marker=55.43714,-3.13160 but it seems to have been built over.

So I think you can safely inform those who are asking that there is no evidence that Adam Hay and Isabella Newto(w)n were ever connected with Thirlestane Castle.
