George Stocks born Halifax 1856, died?
« on: Friday 17 November 23 14:32 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have been trying to find my Great x 2 Grandad for about 20 years.

George Stocks was born on Clover Hill Farm, Skircote in 1856, and is on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. He had served in the army and was discharged to the reserve, but had re enlisted (illegally) and this was found out and he was court martialed in 1884 in Co Cork. There is no trace of him since that I am aware off. He daughter died in 1885 and he is mentioned on the death cert as being in the army, so there was some sort of contact with his wife, but she re marries in October 1885 as a spinster so I can only assume perhaps she knew he wasnt coming back.

He had used the alias of George Walker and George Brown to serve in the Army and Royal Marines and perhaps did this again.

If anyone has any suggestions of where else to look I would be gratefull to recieve them.

In 1881, is he the one married to Agnes at 1881 4402 /92/21 ?

When did he rejoin the army and under what name?
What name was he using when he was court martialed?

Many thanks for your replies, The George Stocks in the Coast Guard, actually died in WW1, 1915 I think. I did get excited when I saw a dog licence for Co Cork for a George Stocks, but alas not mine.

Yes, George is in Halifax in April 1881. He went to the Army Reserve in November 1880 after 6 years service.

He missed Army life it appears, as he appears to enlist as a George Walker to serve in the Army then George Brown in the Royal Marines. Both times previous service came to light, as did when he enlists in the 20th Hussars under his actual name of George Stocks in 1883.

I have checked the Irish GRO, but no sign, and there is a military cemetery nearby to the Prison in Cork, but no George buried there either.
