Crosshouse Hospital....What was there Before ?
« on: Friday 17 November 23 15:09 GMT (UK) »
Apparently Crosshouse Hospital was built in the early seventies....does anyone know the name of the farm, (or farms) that were on the site, prior to that date ?....My Mrs. and her family lived in some farm cottages there in the early fifties, but she can't remember the name of the farm, they had to leave around that time, when her father was jailed for sheep stealing.......

This is a continuation of https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=878082.0

Annandale is still there in the satellite view. It looks as if the hospital was built on a greenfield site on the other side of the road.

I did wonder if it was Annandale.....the wife is going to ring her sister, who is slightly older, and see if she can remember anything.....all my Mrs. can remember is that there was a large pond, at the bottom of the road that their cottage was on.....there IS what looks like a pond on the Side by Side maps, but it has gone on the later map, presumably built over by the hospital.....

On the map below, it looks to me if part of the land prior to the new hospital was already a smaller hospital. I would agree it is the other side of the road from the Annandale Farm, that map shows a church and manse, which is not on the map below. The road from Springside to Crosshouse B7081 was the old A71

This is the gridref with most of the hospital in it https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NS4038

The kirk and manse are in https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NS3938 and they are still there. They are at the corner of the field next to the river, which is now built over with houses. The hospital is in the two fields to the east, the one opposite Annandale and the next one.

The plot thickens.....the wife's sister keeps saying the name "Sardale".....but can't see any such place name on older maps.....there is, or was however a place named Fardalehill, just to the north east of the present hospital, so maybe that's where they lived, the sister-in-law also thinks that their cottage wasn't far from the Massey Harris/Ferguson factory, or at least they could see it in the distance...... it don't help that it is over 70 years since they lived there, before moving to New Cumnock......

Looks like the  factory was located to the south of Crosshouse/Annandale at Moorfields Farm from the 1940s to 1980 although it is not shown on this 1938 plan  https://maps.nls.uk/view/82863228#zoom=3&lat=7037&lon=11627&layers=BT

I wonder if Sardale was how a shortened version of Annandale might have sounded at the time  :-\
