Can anyone find a marriage?
« on: Friday 17 November 23 15:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Can anyone find a marriage between a George Lewis and an Agnes Poland?

Their daughter, Dorothy May, was born in Liverpool (West Derby) on the 16th April 1923.
Her father worked in a sugar factory, perhaps Tate & Lyle, and mother's maiden name was given as being 'Poland'
I havent seen the certificate, I've just been told what is on it.

Dorothy May was unofficially adopted by a couple on the Isle of Man, but I have no idea what happened to George or Agnes.

Did they actually marry? Dorothy's birth was registered as being Dorothy May Lewis, so, at the very least, George must have admitted paternity, but cannot trace an official union.
Unless I find a marriage certificate, knowing any more about the couple will be virtually impossible.

Many Thanks

Sue

Not necessarily as you have the fathers name and the mothers name and the year they had a child.
You can look for both those names on census and birth records.

AP sounds a fairly unusual name to look for so start with her.

As you have been told what is on the certificate can you ascertain the birth address?

There are electoral registers for an Agnes Poland in the 1920's in Liverpool - Albion Terrace.
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

I've searched high and low for both parents, especially Agnes Poland (millions of Poland's in West Derby and Liverpool).

Nothing! As far as I can see.

As I don't know their ages, difficult to start, plus, thei daughter did not stay with them.

I believe that George Lewis worked in a sugar factory (that was what is stated on his daughter's birth certificate), we were thinking, perhaps, Tate & Lyle.

Their daughter married as Dorothy May Lewis Dalgleish (the surname of her 'adoptive' parents).

Thanks

Sue

You could check the birth address on census or electoral registers to see who was living there.

Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

IF - George & Agnes were married - she may have been previously married so would not have married him as Agnes Poland.

Does the birth cert show her as Agnes Lewis nee Poland?  If it just shows her as Agnes Poland then it's more than likely they weren't married

Thought of that...but can't find a George Lewis marrying an Agnes.

Very frustrating 😕
