"The Hollies"
« on: Saturday 18 November 23 18:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi, my 2x great grandparents lived in a house on Ashton Lane called The Hollies.  Would anyone know if that house is still there?  It was sold at auction in 1931 and auction info stated it was about 1.5 acres, 98 yards to Ashton Lane and 68 yards to Carrington Lane.
Would appreciate any help anyone can give.  Thanks.

Are we talking about the area of Carrington?

I don't know the area personally, but looking at the map it seems that those roads today have been given the numbers  A6144 for Carrington Lane and the B5166 for Ashton Lane.

You can virtually walk up and down those roads using Google Maps and see if anything looks like it matches your description.

:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

Not sure if this is the same one, but this document suggests 'The Holly's' is a listed building on on Park Road.

Nah, this doesn't make sense for your location.

This 1938 map shows "The Grange" on Ashton Lane.

The properties on Ashton Road in the Census read " ..., The Grange, Grange Farm, The Hollies, ...".
I think it was the death of Annie Granger in 1931 that led to the sale/auction

Side-by-side

This is the junction of Carrington Lane (B5166) and Ashton Lane (also B5166). Position cursor over building (hatched) in centre of old map for location on modern map - which appears to be "new build".

Thank you all for your help!  I had used google maps and looked at the junction of Ashton Lane and Carrington and it looked to me as though new buildings were there.  And the sites you all so kindly found appear to support that.

Thanks again.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to find who might have purchased the house at auction from the Estate of Annie Grange.  She was my great grandfather's sister in law.  He came back and forth across the "pond" many times after he moved to United States.
Also, I think the house might have been built for Samuel Skaife Grange and his wife, Jane Skaife Grange, around 1860 or so.  Any thoughts on how to find that information?

Samuel died 1885 at the Hollies.
On the 1871 Census he is with Jane and family at "Bowden Parish, Hollies" - Civil Parish (or Township) of Ashton upon Mersey.
